In excess of 60,000 Run from Sudan's City Following Takeover by RSF Militia, UN States
Per the UNHCR, over 60,000 civilians have fled the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces during the weekend.
There have been multiple executions and atrocities as militia members entered the city after an year-and-a-half blockade featuring famine and heavy bombardment.
The movement of those running from the fighting towards the town of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had accelerated in the recent days, according to United Nations refugee agency representative.
Refugees were narrating shocking tales of violence, featuring rape, and the organization was finding it difficult to secure enough accommodation and nourishment for them.
Each child was suffering from malnutrition, she commented.
Calculations indicate that more than 150,000 individuals are currently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's final bastion in the western region of Darfur.
The Rapid Support Forces has disputed widespread claims that the killings in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and mirror a pattern of the Arab fighters targeting ethnic minorities.
However the RSF has detained one of its fighters, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with summary executions.
The organization shared video depicting the member's apprehension subsequent to identification that he was responsible for the execution of several civilians close to el-Fasher.
Video sharing service has verified that it has removed the account connected to Lulu. The status remains unclear whether he had controlled the profile in his name.
Sudan was entered a civil war in April 2023 after a brutal contest for control erupted between its army and the Rapid Support Forces.
This has resulted in a famine and claims of genocide in the western Sudan.
In excess of 150,000 persons have lost their lives in the conflict throughout the country, and roughly 12 million have fled their homes in what the UN has called the world's largest humanitarian disaster.
The seizure of el-Fasher strengthens the territorial division in the country, with the RSF now in control of the western region and significant areas of adjacent Kordofan to the south, and the military holding the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.
The opposing sides had been allies - taking over together in a takeover in 2021 - but split over an foreign-endorsed proposal to move towards civilian rule.
