Hamilton Island, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
