Experts Spot Russian Fear Campaign Targeting Tomahawk Use
Russian authorities is conducting a strategic manipulation campaign of warnings to prevent the US from providing long-range missiles to Kyiv, as reported by conflict researchers. A senior official declared: “We understand these projectiles completely, how they fly, how to shoot them down, we encountered them in Syria, so this is not innovative. The providers and the deploying forces will have problems … We will develop strategies to damage those who cause us trouble.”
Ukrainian Military Push Developments
Kyiv's troops were imposing substantial damage in a counteroffensive in eastern Donetsk region, the primary conflict zone, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on Wednesday. Kyiv's report, derived from a communication with his chief of defense, contrasted with Moscow's remarks to defense leadership a prior day in which he asserted Moscow's forces held the strategic initiative in every combat zone.
Based on evaluation dated October's first week, defense researchers said Russia was incurring heavy casualty rates, mainly because of drone strikes by Ukraine, in return for small operational progress. Ukrainian forces, Ukraine's leader reported, were “defending ourselves along multiple fronts”, referring specifically to the Kupiansk area, a largely destroyed city in Ukraine's northeast under intense attacks for an extended period.
Local Conditions
Local authorities in the Kherson area of Kherson said offensive operations on midweek caused three deaths in and around the city of the oblast center. The governor of northern Sumy, on the northern frontier with the Russian Federation, said three fatalities occurred in Russian drone attacks in multiple locations. Ukraine's air force said it neutralized or disrupted 154 out of 183 offensive unmanned aircraft overnight into Wednesday.
A Russian attack significantly harmed critical infrastructure, government sources stated on midweek. Two workers were injured in the attack, according to power utility representatives. They provided no further information, about the site's whereabouts, but government officials said Russia struck power facilities in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv, southern Ukraine and eastern Ukraine.
Humanitarian Impact
In the border community of Shostka, hit hard by the Russian onslaught against the electrical grid, local government has put up tents where civilians are able to warm up, drink hot tea, power electronic devices and obtain emotional assistance, according to local official.
Diplomatic Measures
The Ukrainian diplomat to the military alliance on Wednesday encouraged European allies to increase acquisitions of American military equipment for Ukrainian forces. “This doesn't mean we favor American weapons rather than European or other international equipment – the reality is that we are requesting the US for systems that EU members can't provide,” said the diplomatic representative.
German federal police will soon be allowed to intercept UAVs, security chief announced on midweek, after a spate of UAV observations suspected as foreign operations to conduct surveillance and threaten. Announcing legal changes, the minister said security forces could legally “to take sophisticated countermeasures against UAV risks, for example with EMP technology, signal disruption, navigation system disruption, but also with kinetic methods”.
Regional Defense Challenges
European leader declared on midweek that Europe must strengthen its security measures to deter Moscow's multifaceted attacks after aerial violations, cyber-attacks and submarine infrastructure disruption. “This is not coincidental events. It is a coherent and escalating campaign,” the representative said in a presentation to the European parliament. “Several occurrences are isolated incidents, but several, many, frequent – that represents a planned and specific hybrid threat strategy against the European Union, and the EU needs to react.”
Displacement Situation
The Swiss authorities has extended its refugee protection provided to people fleeing Ukraine to at least 4 March 2027. Humanitarian status, which enables individuals to leave the country as well as be employed in Switzerland, is typically restricted to one year but can be extended. “The decision shows the persistent dangerous conditions and persistent Russian attacks across extensive regions of the country,” said a Swiss government statement. “Notwithstanding worldwide negotiation attempts, a lasting stabilisation that would allow for protected homecoming is not anticipated in the coming years.”
