Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he holds strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how important this race is,” the mayor commented.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
