Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
