Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
